Travel Tips
- For daytime travel use the 4 Express buses from Mangaluru bus stand (06:30 AM to 03:30 PM); they are unreserved, so pay the conductor on board.
- The 3 evening Karnataka Sarige buses (05:15 PM, 06:30 PM, 08:05 PM) can be reserved on ksrtc.in at ₹208 and reach Chikmagalur between 10:30 PM and midnight.
- The Charmadi Ghat section has many hairpin bends; if you get travel sickness, sit in the front half of the bus and avoid a heavy meal before the climb.
- Evening buses can be boarded at Mangaluru Bus Station, Jyothi Circle, PVS, Pumpwel, Kankanady or Padeel, which saves a trip to the main stand.
Best time to travel: October to March is the best time for the Mangalore–Chikmagalur trip, when the ghat is clear and the coffee hills are green. June to September brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on the Charmadi Ghat, so check road status before travelling.
